6. CHOICES: Are residents able to select their meals? Try to tour and observe meal times. Ask about laundry services.
7. SAFETY: Safety and security are important. Are bathroom accessible, and do they have grab bars present and secure? Ask about a "Wander Guard System." Are call bells within reach and answered timely? Ask about staffing patterns on the evening and night shifts. Ask how staff monitors residents.
8. CARE AND DIGNITY: During your tour ask lots of questions about services and care. Observe residents for proper dress, evidence of good grooming, clean-shavenness and nail care. Ask about bathing options. Are staff interacting with residents in a positive manner?
9. TRUST YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS: As you are touring, can you imagine your loved one being there and feeling comfortable? Was the staff friendly? The facility does not have to be the most beautiful place for them to live comfortably. Follow your instincts and your heart.
