At Regal Heights we know that finding that special
place for a loved one can be difficult, listed below are some useful tips
on what to look forward when you tour:
- IS IT CLEAN:
The facility should be fresh and clean. Look past the obvious and into
corners, windows and baseboards. How often are the room cleaned and
maintained?
- ARE THERE ODORS:
The presence of odors may indicate a lack of cleanliness or a temporary
problem caused by a recent incident. If you find odors throughout the
facility, there may be a problem.
- ARE RESIDENTS
BUSY: Observe activities, ask to see an activity calendar.
Inquire about religious activities if that is important. Are there outings
planned?
- ARE EMPLOYEES
HAPPY: Staff attitude and friendliness are important.
Do they greet you and do they listen? If they make you feel welcome,
then they will make your loved one feel welcome. Ask about staffing
patterns. Look for management presence.
- IS THE SETTING
APPROPRIATE: Is the outdoor setting attractive? Does
the facility location look safe and secure? Are residents sitting out
of doors?
- CHOICES:
Are residents able to select their meals? Try to tour and observe meal
times. Ask about laundry services.
- SAFETY:
Safety and security are important. Are bathroom accessible, and do they
have grab bars present and secure? Ask about a "Wander Guard System."
Are call bells within reach and answered timely? Ask about staffing
patterns on the evening and night shifts. Ask how staff monitors residents.
- CARE AND DIGNITY:
During your tour ask lots of questions about services
and care. Observe residents for proper dress, evidence of good grooming,
clean-shavenness and nail care. Ask about bathing options. Are staff
interacting with residents in a positive manner?
- TRUST YOUR FIRST
IMPRESSIONS: As you are touring, can you imagine your
loved one being there and feeling comfortable? Was the staff friendly?
The facility does not have to be the most beautiful place for them to
live comfortably. Follow your instincts and your heart.
